Catacombs of Avalon
Journal of a Fallen Knight

Note: The original version has been adapted, to coincide with the changes that were made to the Catacombs adventure in summer 2015.

Greetings Avalonians, this is a journal of a Knight of Avalon as he explores the Catacombs. It contains some useful hints.

June 1st

"We have found the catacombs, myself and my loyal Knights. Unfortunately, only 3 of us remain; we originally set out as 5. 2 of my Knights were slain; one by a large scaled dragon, the other fell into a lake at the castle from the broken bridge. I do not grieve for them; they know why we risk our lives here. Fantastic treasures lie beneath..."

June 3rd

"My two remaining Knights and I have set out in this eery, foggy and spooky graveyard. Many have died here, and yet there is much unrest. A grave of 7 dwarves... what could this mean? I get the feeling ghosts and specters roam this place. I sent my knight to investigate, and unfortunately he was torn apart by a swarm of hornets when he spoke to the statue of the Reaper. I wish he had taken something to kill the hornets with, like I had warned him. He died a fool."

June 4th

"Myself and my one remaining knight have lost much morale from the deaths of our 3 fellow Knights of Avalon. But we must not faulter; after all, Courage and Belief will protect us. We discovered a grave, too heavy to move, that we were able to pry apart with a crow bar; beneath there was a secret lair. I am glad the witch granted us the spell of protection... I sense the presence of many furious ghosts. We have come across the Visage of Death, and what lies before us 9 goblets. 8 poison, 1 the key to the next room. If only i had 9 more knights, I could force them all to take a goblet each to find the right one. Unfortunately, we must think about this puzzle; could it have something to do with the dwarves? Or is it something else?"

June 5th

"My last remaining Knight and I have found our way into the room beyond. We are lucky to have survived the Goblet trial.. in all honesty, i told my knight to drink one I chose at random. Such faith they have in me... my Knight believed my choice to be "Divine Wisdom". Little did he know I had played eenie-meenie-miney-mo. Anyway, we have entered this room; a trapped fairy, an arcane ring of surely immense power, and a lever. Unfortunately, we paid no attention to the symbols on the wall; my Knight was ordered to charge ahead. I wish i had more sense at times, because now he is dead and I am to blame."

June 8th

"After many days of searching I have found my way into the Catacombs. I am alone.. but I found the aid of the White Lady, a ghost. Apparently not all ghosts want to kill mortal beings. It turned out my ring of ages was the key to entering the crypt. How i hated the entrance.. a room filled with skulls. To the right of me, just to my left, and even on the far wall there were so many skulls. It sent shivers down my spine.. Or perhaps that was the ghosts that haunted the Crypt. The ghosts here were not friendly.... they wanted to consume my soul."

June 9th

"I searched the first floor. After finding a lever, well hidden behind an illusionary wall, I was able to open another passage, leading to a room with a skeleton sitting on a throne. I placed a chalice i acquired previously in his bony hand and another wall moved, revealing another passage. I had grown weary, and was not paying attention to where I was walking; and all of a sudden I am falling through the floor, to a level below me. I managed to survive the fall completely unharmed; perhaps it is my destiny to conquer this dungeon alone. I will advance carefully, my lantern in hand, and see what I can find. A gate... locked, of course. I want the treasure that lies beyond! A Room... I sense the darkness of this room. Another treasure, and yet, I hesitate to grab it. Am I a coward? I am supposed to be a knight... to face danger head on, sword aloft, shield in hand. Perhaps the death of all my Knights is getting to me..."

June 10th

"I proceeded on my way to a seemingly dead end; I gave up and leaned against the wall, letting out a sigh of despair. To my surprise, a passage opened!"

June 11th

"Who would have thought a key could be in the hands of a skeleton inside one of the stone coffins? The key unlocked a gate leading to the room with the chest, I noticed before. The treasure chest contained an Antique Lantern that shone with brilliant light, to dispel the darkness of the room with the treasure."

June 12th

"I have been up all night, once again, searching for clues to these mysteries. I have found a most disturbing room... there are bones, and skulls, and skulls and more skulls and more skulls still. I shall tap them all; every last one. One is bound to hide a secret."

June 13th

"I cannot believe I spent an entire daytime tapping those skulls. However, I found another hidden passage with a room, containing a book and another stone coffin. Reading the ancient book, most of the pages crumbled, but I found some words I would surely need later. Inside the coffin there was another rune in the clutch of a skeleton. Things progress well for me. I will now search for another clue... I know i must be getting close."

June 14th

"Today I met a specter in one of the dark tunnels; he asked me to find his Precious. Luckily I had found a magical ring, and shown that to him; it was, with chance or perhaps divine intervention, the item he seeked. I felt for sure he was going to kill me... either way, he gave me a rune I would surely need later."

June 15th

"The pain... he wounded me severely. I felt my soul being separated from my body. What powerful dark magic! After all I had accomplished... a puzzle so easy to me, for I am a Knight. A word puzzle, discussing the tribunals of heretics. I wish i had a scroll to fight the Soul Devourer with; he has wounded me most gravely."

June 16th

"I have managed to stumble down what appears to be a cave with an underground lake, and dragged myself onto a crumbled stone on the corner. My wounds are mortal, I know that I am going to die here. All I can do is wait here in the corner, until I finally die and haunt the Catacombs for all eternity. I will take my revenge... anyone who would dare enter the catacombs without a spell of protection will be slain by me. These are my last words and a warning to all those, who dare to enter the Catacombs."
